I’m Falling Apart! Parts Work and Sub Personalities

Parts Work and Sub Personalities; a therapist sitting with his notepad
How many times have we heard ourselves or others express their fear of falling apart?

Usually when at our lowest ebb, or at a time when we feel out of control and uncomfortable with
where we are in life.

If we take those words literally it implies that we are made up of parts, parts that are now in some
way disconnected, or at the very least not working with each other.

What are Sub Personalities?

Parts Work allows the therapist to isolate and talk with those specific parts of us – the parts we call
our sub-personalities.

Think of the hats you wear, and the different roles you play in your life. Do you always use the same
parts of you, or do certain roles dictate your actions and behaviours?

Maybe at work, you bring your logical side to the fore, maybe the serious side, the managerial side
or the dominant side. At home, you may favour other parts, maybe the carer, the subservient, the
social animal or the extrovert.

How can Parts Work help me?

Knowing that we are all made of many parts, allows us to look deeper into why these parts come
forward, when these parts do not work for us and when we might need to look at acceptance, to
fully appreciate and integrate ourselves as a whole.

Others can trigger certain parts of us. Maybe we become defensive around certain people, maybe
we fall quiet in the presence of a dominant personality, or avoid confrontation at all costs.
By looking at these reactions, we can better understand what makes us the person we are and
sometimes journey back to the times that have caused these triggers to affect us.

Parts Work can even allow us the opportunity of conversing with numerous parts, seeing how they
interact, which parts retreat into the background and which assert themselves and shout down the
others. We can all learn from this technique.

Integrating Our Shadow Side(s)

It gives every part of us a voice, a voice that may not have been heard for a very long time. This voice
may express elements of our ‘shadow side/s’, those parts of us we choose to ignore, feel ashamed
of, or deemed as ‘bad’. This in itself helps us to heal and fully integrate.

‘Parts Work and Sub-personalities’ is just one module that forms a part of our larger Spiritual
Counselling Diploma.

It provides insights and life lessons from which we can all gain a deeper perception of ourselves. It
gives us practical exercises to encourage this and the ability as therapists to facilitate positive action
towards acceptance and integration.

Once all of our parts begin to make sense, we then have the gift of sensing what all of our parts can
do for us, with us - to help us navigate through life.
